THE SAFE ZONE PROGRAM
The Safe Zone Program is designed to create a structured and supportive environment for children at risk in communities affected by poverty, crime, abuse, neglect, or abandonment
Key components of the program:
- Safe Environment: Each Safe Zone is established in partnership with local churches providing a physical space that is safe, welcoming, and conducive to learning and growth.
- Structured Schedule: Programs are structured to provide consistency and routine for the children, helping to stabilize their lives amidst challenging circumstances.
- Community Involvement: Engages the local community through volunteerism, fostering a sense of ownership and collective responsibility for the well-being of the children.
The four pillars of every program

1. Nutrition
- Hot Nourishing Meals: Every child participating in the Safe Zone receives a nutritious meal, which may be the only guaranteed meal they receive that day. This not only addresses immediate hunger but also supports overall health and development.
- Health Education: Alongside meals, nutritional education is provided to children and their families, promoting healthy eating habits that can improve long-term health outcomes.
2 .Spiritual/Emotional Support
- Mentoring: Trained volunteers and staff offer emotional support to children, providing them with a safe space to express themselves, process trauma, and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
- Values-Based Education: Incorporates teachings on compassion, empathy, and respect, rooted in spiritual, biblical principles, to help children build strong moral foundations and resilience.

3. Educational Support
- Tutoring and Homework Assistance: Ensures children receive academic support to enhance their learning and educational outcomes.
- Access to Resources: Provides access to books, educational materials, and technology, bridging the gap for children who lack resources at home.
4. Developmental Activities
- Recreational and Creative Activities: Engages children in age-appropriate recreational and creative pursuits such as sports, arts and crafts, music, and drama, preparing them for a better future.
- Life Skills Training: Teaches practical skills such as personal hygiene, health, teamwork, conflict resolution, and decision-making, empowering children to navigate challenges and make positive life choices.

SAFE ZONE IN MAZATLAN

Safe Zone in Flores Magon Mazatlan
Flores Magon is a neighborhood that sits high above the city, completely under the control of criminal groups. Meet Mario and Libya Chavez. They pastor a church up on this hill and have been a part of this community for many years. It has been a dream of Libya’s to help the children in her neighborhood who are victims of poverty, crime, abuse and neglect. This Safe Zone program has become a shining light and an example of what can be accomplished in the lives of children at risk.
Safe Zone in Playa Sur Mazatlan
Playa Sur is located right beside the “red zone” of Mazatlan close to the center of town. Some refer to this area as “sin city”. It is the center of prostitution, drugs and human trafficking in the city. Meet Mauricio and Gris Marron. They pastor a church that forms part of the historic buildings of the city. Mauricio, an accomplished musician, gives free music lessons to children in the poorest schools of the city. Music has become a key part of the Safe Zone project in Playa Sur.

Safe Zone in Stone Island Mazatlan
Stone Island is a community of abject poverty right across the shipping channel from Mazatlan. The thousands of tourists who visit the beautiful beaches there every day have no clue of the daily reality lived by its residents. Meet Efrain and Amanda Reina. They moved to the island 3 years ago and pastor a small church in the community. At times it seems like an uphill battle in a place where the town is ruled by poverty, lack of education and the drug cartel. Safe Zone has become a beacon of hope for the youngest residents. It is also bringing the community together as new volunteers continue to join the effort.
